The True Church produces saints. A traditional Catholic should assist the traditional mass AND be a saint. After all, it was the old mass that produced nearly every saint in the book. In general, I loved the original post and the ensuing comments.

I just wanted to weigh in here on the "kids need socialization" aspect of the thread...home schooled children are as out of (or in!) the social loop as their parents. Same age socializing, as is the norm in institutional education, is of extremely dubious value. We are not "age-segregated" as adults and why should we think that segregating our children in this way would be healthy/normal/helpful?

The evidence for home schooled kids being socially inept is anecdotal, and is easy to counter with equally anecdotal evidence. The bottom line is that freakish, socially inept adults are more likely to have socially inept kids, because that's what the kids see. Well adjusted adults have well adjusted kids, barring chemical or genetic issues.

Our 10 year old (never institutionally schooled) has more good, close friends than my wife and I had as reasonably socially adept public school kids. Close friends are the ones that you can not talk to for a month or 6 months and they are still glad to see or hear from you and you feel like you never skipped a beat. Friends of convenience require weekly or daily maintenance to remain "friends". I will gladly take close friends over "friends of convenience" any day.

"Socialization by the government" sounds so Orwellian that I can't understand why otherwise free-thinking, yet tradition-minded, adults wouldn't cringe at the thought. And yet, the "school as place where kids get socialized" is such a commonplace in discussions of home schooling that
I feel impelled to address the absurdity of the comment.

The expertise of teachers is another mantra that needs to be decisively addressed. Beyond what any self-educating adult is capble of, teachers are trained in crowd control and group psychology techniques (which, incidentally don't apply to home school environments). As home schooling families, we each have the right to use whatever techniques are consistent with our religious, ethical, moral, and pedagogical world-views, and effective with our children.
http://www.blogger.com/feeds/8127284625930995085/2870713298191943376/comments/default/4401384287323992479
self
application/atom+xml
http://www.blogger.com/feeds/8127284625930995085/2870713298191943376/comments/default/4401384287323992479
alternate
text/html
http://eviltraditionalist.blogspot.com/2007/05/rebuilding-our-foundations.html?showComment=1178313900000#c4401384287323992479
{"$t":"Anthony
$t":"http://www.blogger.com/profile/06027113590253301124
$t":"noreply@blogger.com"}}],"thr$in-reply-to":{"xmlns$thr":"http://purl.org/syndication/thread/1.0
{"$t":"tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8127284625930995085.post-8698250292139853732
$t":"2007-05-04T16:22:00.000-05:00
$t":"2007-05-04T16:22:00.000-05:00
text","$t":"I've been out here in the sticks for 20 years now,...
html","$t":"I've been out here in the sticks for 20 years now, and homeschooling for 25, so I feel quilfied to offer some advice.

1) as a neighbor lady said to me, "Don't sell wool, sell socks" Wool sells for $0.25 to $1/pound. Her hand knitted socks (labeled with the name of the sheep that produced the wool) sell for $40/pair. Granted, the socks are a lot more work, having to spin the wool, and knit them, but the premium for selling a finished product is the only reliable way to make money from sheep some years. The vineyard idea is an excellent one. So is a bakery, especially if you grow the grain right there, where people can see it.
2)Excess ambition killed many more back-to-the-land dreams than bad weather. Think carefully about what you plan to do, before you try to do it. Don't borrow money to buy a hundred acres if you will only need 20. Don't plant a 5-acre garden before you know how much work is involved in a 1/4 acre garden.
3)Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or go without. Don't spend a nickel you don't need to, certainly never borrow a nickel that isn't going to return twenty-five cents, and not even always then.
4) Do it yourself is not a slogan. It's how you really have to approach the work. Any good farmer is a generalist. You will need to learn to weld, build a shed, fix an engine, and deliver a baby goat. Don't hire anything done unless it requires a tool you simply can't afford AND it's cheaper than renting the tools to do yourself.
5) Your neighbors know a lot more than you do. Get to know them. Introduce yourself when you're looking at the property, and ask them about it. You can find out a tremendous amount by doing so. I narrowly avoided buying a place where the well ran dry every summer by doing this. Once you're in, make a point of talking to them and asking their advice. Rural people tend to be reticent, not so much from shyness as from politeness.
6)Find a community. Hopefully it's centered in a church, but any kind of a community is better than none.
7) Don't sweat the socialization issue. Get involved a church (which is the proper place for a kid to find friends) and be active there. The rest happens naturally.
8)Diversify. One crop, one income stream, one plan is not enough. The more diverse your work, the more you can spread your income through the year. It also helps disspate the stress to be able to put down one tool and pick up another, just for the change.

Do it as soon as you can. While a sexual appetite for the opposite sex is healthy and normal and is a god-given aspect of our humanity, a sexual appetite for members of the same sex is disordered, and if indulged, gravely sinful. We can only discern order through nature and the divine law, of course, but in this case, nature suffices. As the natural end of the consumption of food is nourishment, the natural end of sexual intercourse is procreation. Homosexual sex is about as natural as a person trying to eat through their ear.

It happens that both food and sex give pleasure. But pleasure is not their primary end. Pleasure is a good of the act of either eating or engaging in the marrital act (sex outside of marriage is not a legitimate good) but it is a secondary good, to be subjected to the primary. People who eat simply for the sake of pleasure either get sick or get fat.

People who engage in sex simply for the pleasure distort the appetite, objectify and use their partner, and sicken the soul. Many become bored with normal levels of pleasure and have to go to greater and greater extremes to obtain any pleasure at all. Often times, the desire for pleasure at this point crosses over into pain. It comes as no surprise that many serial killers have been found to have been addicted to pornography. Objectification of persons leads to the inevitable fact of doing violence toward them, whether this is emotional or physical.

Back to the point of the discussion now. Children who have "two mommies" are victims, plain and simple. They are not evil. I would also not classify their "parents" as evil, I would only say that they are engaging in evil acts.

If I were a teacher in a public school setting, I would not encourage discussion of such things in the classroom. I would encourage and reinforce the traditional notions of marriage and family. If I was confronted with an expectation that I should accept, promote, tolerate or conform to deviant sexual relationships in the families of my students, I would, quite simply, resign.

Let me again drive home the point that the Church DOES NOT TEACH that sexuality is evil. In fact, we Catholics so revere the power and intimacy of the sexual act that it has been enshrined in the form of a sacrament - the sacrament of marriage. We believe that the marital embrace not only unifies the spouses but brings grace to them from heaven as it renews their covenant with one another and with God.

And the blessing of children, the highest good of marriage, allows spouses to participate in the act of creation of souls, something of inestimable value. This comes through our sexuality, and it is a terrible and wonderful thing that should be treated with reverence and respect.

But it is of paramount importance to recognize that in morality, context is king. If I were to do violence to a person walking down the street because I was in a bad mood on a given day, it would be a violation of the fifth commandment. But if I did violence to an intruder threatening my chidlren I would be acting virtuously in the defense of the innocent.

Sex has consequences. It also requires context. Heterosexual sexual relations outside the context of marriage is still sinful because of the grave responsibility with which the procreative and unitive powers of our sexuality are imbued, but it is at least not a sin against nature.

Homesexual relationships are sinful because not only do they employ the sexual faculties outside the context of marriage, but outside the context of nature. They so remove the procreative power from the act that they are little more than self-abuse with the help of another. They are acts of pleasure without responsibility, of desire without the capacity for true marital unity or compatibility, which can only occur between a man and a woman.

They are evil and selfish acts, and the persons committing them desparately need our prayers.

Because there is a clamor of voices saying "what was wrong is right, what was deviant is normal" does not make it so. It is simply a small but vocal mob, trying to impose their irreligious views on the majority.
http://www.blogger.com/feeds/8127284625930995085/5172364632895664115/comments/default/6253947247996710128
self
application/atom+xml
http://www.blogger.com/feeds/8127284625930995085/5172364632895664115/comments/default/6253947247996710128
alternate
text/html
http://eviltraditionalist.blogspot.com/2007/05/take-deep-breaths.html?showComment=1178209680000#c6253947247996710128
{"$t":"Steve
$t":"http://www.blogger.com/profile/03577776429922925660
$t":"noreply@blogger.com"},"gd$extendedProperty":{"xmlns$gd":"http://schemas.google.com/g/2005
{"$t":"tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8127284625930995085.post-1758650766259662558
$t":"2007-05-03T10:54:00.000-05:00
$t":"2007-05-03T10:54:00.000-05:00
text","$t":"SteveCheers for the response. I appreciate your position, but wonder how you would advise a teacher to handle a child with 'two mothers', as in the storybook we heard being read to the children in the video. Do you let it pass, or do you explain to the child about their mothers' sexual deviancy? The teachers in that video seem to me to be well meaning, in that they're teaching tolerance rather than bigotry and hatred. I grew up in western Michigan, ruled by the Dutch and the Christian Reformed. But back in 1982 (7th grade), I remember our teacher showing us movies throughout the year on Sweden. At the time I did not understand why we were spending so much time on this country, but now I do. I can still remember the documentaries: I remember them telling us how socialism in Sweden makes everyone live in harmony, they showed everyone living in the same kind of homes, same cars, no one better than the other. They even stated at one point that a garbage man makes almost the same amount of money as a doctor, so those who are not that smart are not deprived a good living. I just remember the movie clips of the Swede's fishing and just having a good time, life was easy and enjoyable, there were no poor, etc.
The point I'm trying to make is that today Sweden is very socialist, no Christianity, and they have a high rate of divorce, couples living together instead of being married, and a high rate of homosexuality.
Yet, when I was in 7th grade the idea of Sweden's way of life and thinking was being pushed on me to admire it when I was young while at school. There was an agenda there and now look at the State of Michigan, it is one of the most liberal socialist States in our nation. But this idea of socialism was in the public school system a long time ago in Michigan.
So this is how liberalism and Satan works. They take their time and are very smart.
